Saskatchewan educator and symphony conductor, David Kaplan, dies at 91

SASKATOON – A Saskatchewan musical icon has died at the age of 91.
David Kaplan, who was born in Chicago, became a music professor at the University of Saskatchewan in 1960, and ended up teaching there for more than 40 years.
Kaplan also created the University of Saskatchewan concert band and conducted the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra for 10 years.
Glen Gillis, interim head of the university’s department of music, says Kaplan was a life-changing influence who taught him not to be one-dimensional in the music industry.
Kaplan retired in the 1990s.
He was a member of the Order of Canada and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.
