11:00 – Good Samaritan Fined

Imagine…looking out your window…and seeing a parking lot full of trash. While many of us look away and continue on with our day…a Hamilton man decided to do something about it. The article in the Hamilton Spectator outlines how Ted Pundey was approached by three by-law officers as he was cleaning up the area, which has been identified as an illegal dumping ‘hot spot.’ Pleased at first, he thought they were there to give him a hand. Instead, he was handed a 125 dollar ticket – as he’d stacked the boxes on public property. Assuming he was being helpful, he’d placed the boxes beside a posted sign in the alley, which advertised designated pick-up times between 10 a.m. and noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. A reporter covering the story reached out to the city’s municipal law enforcement manager, who says “Had he “dumped” the garbage during one of those designated timeslots he would not have been fined.” Molly Hayes of the Hamilton Spectator joins us now.
11:30 – Remembering Eugene George

It was 1963 – and Eugene George was the driving force behind bringing the Rangers to Kitchener. He was the Ranger’s first President, and the visionary behind the community ownership. They were the Guelph Royals at the time, owned by the New York Rangers, and were moved to Kitchener at no charge. They were so impressed at the ease of the transition, that George was first in line when it came to buying the Kitchener Club – although he wanted the team to be owned by the community. George served as founding president of both the Canadian and Ontario Masonry Contractor’s Associations. He was the first Canadian to be president of the Masonry Contractor Association of America and the International Masonry Institute. George was inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame in 2010.
