Jay Aissa, ran for Regional Chair, Waterloo Region
Jay Aissa pulled out all the stops in last October’s municipal election – but to no avail. The owner of Jay Fencing in Waterloo spent a whopping 226-thousand dollars on robocalls, advertising, salaries, benefits and professional fees. In the end though – he only took 24% of the vote. The winner, Ken Seiling took 59% of the vote, spending just under $7 thousand dollars of his own money. When Aissa was running, he repeatedly spoke against the LRT.
12:30 – Instagram Photo Controversy
Rupi Kaur, University of Waterloo student, artist & poet
A Toronto-area artist and poet has made national headlines for her project, as part of a visual rhetoric course at the University of Waterloo. Her project, entitled ‘Period’, was removed twice from her instagram account. The photo shows her curled up in bed, fully clothed, with a blood stain on her pants and bed. The picture was initially removed on March 25th for “violating community guidelines – which forbid nudity, illegal activity and images that glorify self-harm.” Kaur took to social media, “Thank you @instagram for providing me with the exact response my work was created to critique. When your pages are filled with countless photos/accounts where women (so many who are underage) are objectified. Pornified. And treated less than human. Thank you.” Her posts received thousands of likes and shares. Instagram has since apologized.
