In a new report, Ontario’s Chief elections officer urges the province to hold the next election on a weekend or holiday in June. Greg Essensa says it would be easier for people to vote if elections were held on a Saturday, Sunday or school holiday. Currently, the law requires a provincial election to be held every fourth year on the first Thursday in October. Essensa sites Australia as a prime example – the country holds its election on weekends and has a voter turnout of 52 per cent. At least one MPP supports the recommendation – saying we should be looking at any changes that may encourage people to cast their ballots.

A new policy will force Doctors, who choose not to perform abortions and other procedures on religious and moral grounds, to refer people to doctors who will perform the procedure. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario updated its human rights policy following complaints about access to care. It’s been reported that walk-in clinics in Ottawa and Calgary refused to prescribe birth control last year. Depending on the seriousness of the situations, physicians who do not comply with the new policy could lose their medical license.
