St. Patrick’s Day is a week away and with the celebration of the Irish just around the corner, Waterloo Regional Police are reminding students to stay safe. Police say they want to make sure students know the law – and will be out and about in student neighbourhoods in Waterloo tonight from 7 until 9 o’clock. Regional Police tell 570 News they want to maintain a strong relationship with students and make sure everyone has safety in mind when ‘going green.’ Over the past few years thousands of students have spilled out onto the streets… along Ezra and Seagram. For the second year running, a privately organized event in a licensed tent on Seagram Drive will mean significantly fewer people on the street, but public safety remains the top priority.

The Conservative Government is poised to introduce legislation that a life sentence in Canada will mean just that – a sentence for life. Prime Minister Stephen Harper says the Government wants to all but eliminate any chance of release for those convicted of the most repulsive and heinous crimes. (Includes sexual assault; kidnapping or forcible confinement; terrorism; the killing of police officers or corrections officers; or, any first degree murders that are found to be of a particularly brutal nature.) Critics say the bill could prove unnecessary and harmful; saying it could make jails even more dangerous and costly to run. Canada’s toughest penalty is currently life in prison with no option of parole for 25 years.
