10:00 – LRT impact on events

Three popular events in Waterloo Region, including the Oktoberfest parade, are on the move to different locations this year due to construction on the Light Rail Transit system. Regional Commissioner of Transportation and Environmental services, Thomas Schmidt says that parades, including the Kitchener Waterloo Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as the K-W Santa Claus Parade will likely have different routes this year. Also moving is the Sun Life Financial Waterloo Busker Carnival. It’s been a mainstay on King Street in uptown Waterloo for over 25 years, but this week organizers announced that in 2015 it would set up shop in the parking lot behind Waterloo City Hall on Regina Street.
10:30 – Mars One Mission
Ben Crigger, Mars One Candidate
A once in a lifetime opportunity – a one-way trip to Mars – and a Waterloo graduate is in the running. Ben Crigger is one of 100 candidates from around the world who have been shortlisted for the mission – and one of just six Canadians who’ve made the cut. The controversial plan by a Dutch-based organization is to establish a colony on Mars by 2025. Mars One, the non-profit organization spearheading the project, says the six Canadians include four people from Ontario and two from British Columbia. The 28 year old completed his PhD at the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing. Mars One says the mission will cost about six-billion dollars and can be done using existing technology.
