10:00 AM – Eve Adams defects

Prime Minister Harper didn’t appear very concerned that one of his Toronto-area M-Ps yesterday announced she’s leaving the Conservative ranks and crossing the floor to the Liberals. Eve Adams defected with the full support of her fiancé, former top Conservative operative Dimitri Soudas. Adams had hoped to run again for the Tories in the newly-created riding of Oakville North-Burlington, but a bitter nomination contest led to both candidates dropping out amid allegations of dirty tricks. Tory Party president John Walsh says Adams asked weeks ago about running in another riding, but was told no. Harper said the party’s national council is responsible for an honest, clean nomination process.
10:30 AM – Todd Cowan – Charged

The former Mayor of the Southwestern Ontario community of Woolwich Township is facing charges following a provincial police investigation. OPP say they were contacted last October by Waterloo regional police requesting they conduct an investigation into expense claims filed by Woolwich Township’s mayor. Police say 50-year old Todd Cowan has been charged following an anti-rackets branch investigation. Cowan is charged with fraud under $5,000 and breach of trust and is to appear in Kitchener court on March 3. Cowan was elected mayor of Woolwich in 2010, but finished last out of four candidates in last October’s municipal election.
