Police launch arson investigation into Victoria Common fire

A multi-million dollar fire at Victoria Common back in July, is now being treated as arson.
Regional Police aren’t saying what they’ve found, but do say the evidence suggests the fire was deliberately set.
“We really can’t get into the details of what the investigators know at this point. That could jeopardize the integrity of the investigation” says Regional Police Spokesperson, Olaf Heinzel. “What we can say is simply that, as a result of the ongoing investigation, the information gathered, investigators are now in a position where they’re confident in saying they believe it was a result of a criminal act.”
At this point, Regional Police don’t have any major leads, but they’re asking the public to come forward with any tips they may have. They’re also encouraging whoever set the fire, to do the right thing, and come foward.
“We certainly would appeal to the person or the people responsible for this to come forward” adds Olaf. “That would certainly expedite this investigation, and it certainly would be an opportunity for those individuals to perhaps explain their actions.”
If the suspect is found guilty of arson, they could face a number of consequences, including hefty fines and possibly jail time.
“The criminal code only outlines the maximum penalties whether they be prison terms or cash penalties” says Police Spokesperson, Olaf Heinzel. “So it’s difficult to predict that at this time, but it is a criminal offense with serious consequences.”
The fire happened back on July 22nd, displacing residents and causing $4.6 million dollars worth of damage. Construction equipment was damaged, and several units were also completely destroyed.
