New school year busy for noise complaints

Since last Friday, By-law officers have answered roughly 20 noise and nuisance calls in the city of Waterloo.
One call ended up in a $490 fine for a student residence in the Northdale area, after calls about a house party with about 80 students.
Officials say this is typical behaviour around this time of year and that complaints usually peak during the third week of September.
“Be respectful of the neighbourhood and the other tenants living within the building” says Manager of Licensing and Standards with the city of Waterloo, Shamir Mehta. “So enjoy yourself, but be smart and safe about it. Keep the noise to a minimum, and nuisance related behaviour will not be tolerated, and charges will be issued.”
Mehta adds that he wants students to have the same behaviour as if they were living back home with their parents.
“We’re working with the code of conduct representatives from each university” adds Mehta. “As we sense or notice certain behaviours at properties throughout Waterloo that require that proactive discussion, we engage the universities as well, wherever possible.”
Officers say they’re continuing to respond to the area on a round-the-clock basis.
