We’ve all experienced some of the social and interpersonal disruptions brought on with smartphone overuse; fewer face-to-face conversations, greater distractions, and a certain “hyper-vigilance” an inattention brought out with the anticipation of incoming text messages and phone calls. And all too often, what used to pass for manners and common courtesy has fallen by the wayside. With smartphone usage in developed countries like the U.K. hovering around 71% of all households, the problem of smartphone overuse isn’t going away anytime soon. Provincial police say they’re dedicating more resources to crack down on distracted drivers. 10 unmarked cruisers will be on the roads over the Labour Day long weekend and the O-P-P anticipates they’ll help make the roads safer. In O-P-P jurisdictions, 35 people have died so far this year in motor vehicle collisions in which an inattentive driver was a contributing factor. Police say they’re especially concerned about drivers who talk on their cell phones or text while they drive. OPP have already charged over 10,000 drivers this year under Ontario’s distracted driving laws and that number is expected to go up with the addition of the unmarked vehicles. “These vehicles will be unmarked traveling along the highways giving officers a better opportunity to see drivers being distracted and conducting enforcement as necessary,” says OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt.
