Regional Council approve bus rapid transit contract

Summer construction will be even busier this summer in Cambridge as Regional Council approved the ION adapted Bus Rapid Transit contract last night.

The $5.7 million contract was given to Steed and Evans Limited with construction set to begin mid-July and be finished by December.

Regional Council has said Cambridge will eventually have the Light Rail Transit replace the buses after ridership grows in the coming years.

The buses will connect residents with the ION Fairview Terminal in Kitchener. The project in Cambridge will see three Northbound and three Southbound stops along Hespeler Road including one at Pinebush Road, one at Can-Amera Parkway and the other at the Delta Waterloo.

Improvements will also be made to the Ainslie Street Terminal and other roadway conditions.

Council says two way traffic will be maintained along Hespeler Road for the duration of the construction with the majority of the work happenning in the traffic lane closest to the sidewalk.
