BlackBerry says it made a profit of $23 million during its first quarter, beating analyst expectations. The smartphone maker says the results were equal to four cents per share, compared with a loss of $84 million or 16cents a year ago. On an adjusted basis, the company reported a loss of 11 cents per share, which came in above analyst estimates of a loss of 26cents, according to Thomson Reuters. Revenue fell to $966 million for the 3 months ended May 31 compared with $3.07 billion a year ago. BlackBerry will hold its annual shareholders meeting later this morning in Waterloo. Chief executive John Chen has said he aims to make it a break-even company by the end of the fiscal year with a target of rising to profitability in its 2016 financial year.
10:30- Barbara Hall, Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission
Ontario’s Human Rights Commissioner says new guidelines on how to handle issues related to mentally ill people will be a helpful tool for employers, landlords and others. Hall says many people are afraid to be open about their mental illnesses, due to stigma, discrimination and other barriers. The commission today released a 109-page policy explaining the rights of people with mental health issues, and advice on how to deal with situations where these people are involved. Statistics suggest one in five Canadians experience a mental health illness in any given year.
