Structur3d Printing has created a ‘universal paste extruder’ that allows 3d printers to print in a wide range of paste-like materials, ranging from industrial materials like silicone and polyurethane to edible materials like cake icing or Nutella. They launched their Kickstarter campaign on June 12th, with the goal of raising $30,000 through pre-sales of their product. That goal was broken within 24 hours of going online, with approximately $80K now pledged. A lot of this success had to do with their trip to Maker Faire in California, where they were one of only 16 startups to get a both in the massive 120,000 person festival. There also has been extensive coverage, particularly on the ability to print with Nutella. The Nutella is a lot of fun of course, but the potential industrial and educational aspects are probably the key features of the Discov3ry extruder.
