June 12th election date set for Ontario

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has called a general election for June 12th after both opposition parties vow to defeat the minority Liberal government’s budget tabled Thursday.Wynne visited Lieutenant Governor David Onley this afternoon to ask him to dissolve the legislature after the NDP announced they would join with the Conservatives to vote against the budget.
She says voters have a choice between a balanced Liberal approach to job creation and economic growth or an opposition party that she says would put the recovery at risk with reckless schemes. She adds it’s a choice between Liberal “safe hands or risky tactics” of the opposition parties.
Earlier today, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath confirmed her party would be voting against the budget that came down yesterday. She said her party could not continue to prop up a government that has been the focus of scandal after scandal, and will join the Progressive Conservatives to defeat the budget.
The premier said earlier today that she was disappointed the NDP decided they couldn’t keep working with the Liberals. Meanwhile, Progressive Conservatives Leader Tim Hudak criticized the New Democrats for taking so long to decide to defeat the Liberals.
