OPP warn residents of recent scam

OPP are warning the public about a recent scam.
Several phone calls and emails have been received by persons claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.
Those sending the calls and emails say that money is owed in back taxes or a refund and needs to be paid immediately.
The OPP remind residents that the CRA will never request personal information through these means of contact.
Here are some tips from the OPP to avoid being scammed:
– Do not take immediate action. Verify that what you are being told is the truth.
– Ask yourself why the CRA would be asking for personal information over the phone or e-mail that they likely already have on file for you as a taxpayer.
– Contact the CRA to confirm that you in fact owe back taxes, or are entitled to a refund, before providing any personal or banking information.
