A wrong way driver on the westbound 401 this morning has turned into an attempted murder investigation.
Police were called to the westbound 401 near highway 6 north to a report of a driver going the wrong way at around 5:30.
The suspect vehicle was stopped when the officer got out of the cruiser and tried to speak to the driver, but the vehicle rammed the cruiser and attempted to leave the scene.
Sergeant Dave Woodford tells 570 News the suspect was arrested at the scene, “As a result of that investigation, we learned there was a prior incident that occured on the 401, in the westbound lanes, just by the service centre involving this vehicle, right now our criminal investigation branch out of Orillia has been called to the scene to assist in the investigation as we’re now looking at an attempted murder. A person has been transported to hospital with injuries, so the investigation right now is at that point.”
Woodford adds this is going to be a lengthy investigation, ” We’re just trying to put the pieces together and it is confusing. That’s why part of the highway has been closed because we are looking at an attempt murder investigation.”
As for the OPP officer, he was not injured in the crash.
