The driver of a GRT bus involved in a collision with a St. Mary’s High School student in 2011 has been cleared of careless driving charges.
The Record reports that a court found Cassi Lam, the pedestrian who was hit by the bus at the Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road roundabout in Kitchener two years ago, did not indicate to the driver she was crossing the road.
Lam’s family is suing the driver, 41-year-old Rafael Quintanilla, and area governments for $17 million.
570 News spoke to some pedestrians about the case on Wednesday afternoon. Heather regularly crosses at that roundabout, and feels something needs to be done. “Too much commotion in this roundabout, I don’t like it all. Dangerous for kids, and anyone trying to cross. I hate the roundabouts, they just cause accidents period.”
The 2012 Collision Report for the region says that roundabout is not only the busiest, but experienced a staggering 53 collisions last year – a number double what was expected.
