Fife says fall prevention training never enacted

A local politician is demanding answers about construction worker safety.
Kitchener-Waterloo NDP MPP Catherine Fife used a local tragedy in Waterloo where Nick Lalonde fell to his death three weeks ago and a December 2009 accident in Toronto where four workers died when scaffolding they were on collapsed, to draw attention to safety legislation at Queen’s Park on Tuesday.
She says an investigation following the death of those four workers made a recommendation that was never followed through with.
Fife says in December 2010 the panel recommended the introduction of mandatory fall prevention safety training for workers and a heights training regulation be in place by December 2011.
She says the training standard was developed in 2010, but was never enacted.
Fife asked the Minister of Labour when the regulation that could save lives would be enacted.
Yasir Naqvi didn’t have an answer but did say the ministry was still investigating the case of Lalonde.
Fife says since June of this year nine workers in Ontario have fallen to their deaths.
