Rangers vs Storm, DeKort, Marcantuoni and more

If you blinked at any time within the last week, you more than likely missed some of the happenings in and around the East Avenue Blue.
Let’s get you caught up.
First off, the Rangers have added a goaltender to the existing tandem of overager Tyson Teichmann and 18 year-old Jack Moylan. 18 year-old Markham native Jordan Dekort, the Windsor Spitfires second round pick in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection, joins the team in exchange for Kitchener’s sixth round pick in 2015, originally Windsor’s pick which the Rangers obtained from Oshawa in the Josh Sterk deal. Essentially, Windsor gets their pick back. DeKort has played 35 regular season games in the OHL holding a 4-17-1-2 record and will get the start tonight with the red hot Storm in town.
“Jordan’s going to start tonight and I know he’s excited about it. We’re happy to have Jordan, I think he’s got a lot of potential and hopefully he sees that through”, said head coach Troy Smith speaking with 570’s Gary Doyle Tuesday afternoon.
With two mid week games, the Rangers will play three games over the next for days, something Smith says he likes, “It breaks up the week, especially with the last two months. We’ve had quite a number of practices and it breaks it up a little bit. We need to play some more games.” The team travels down the 401 for a tilt against London Thursday night before coming back to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium for a game against the Windsor Spitfires on Friday night.
Matia Marcantuoni meantime, has inked an NHL contract. Pittsburgh Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero announced Saturday the club had signed the forward to a three-year entry-level contract. Marcantuoni was drafted by the Penguins in the fourth round (92 overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He has played in 139 regular season game with Kitchener, netting 30 goals, 42 helpers, good for 72 points.
A few former Kitchener Rangers have been either traded, suspended or scoring goals, depending who you’re looking at.
Cambridge native Cory Genovese, now with the Erie Otters, is in some hot water, again. The defenseman received a match penalty for “intent to injure” during Saturday’s game versus Ottawa. The penalty draws an automatic three game suspension but the league is reviewing the play and a stiffer suspension could be handed down. Genovese recently returned from a five game suspension he received for cross-checking Windsor’s Ty Bilcke in the face.
Owen Stewart meantime, has been dealt by the London Knights to the Ottawa 67’s. London picked up Stewart off waivers from the Rangers and will get a 15th round pick in 2015 back from Ottawa in the exchange.
Overager Eric Ming seems to have settled in with the Niagara Ice Dogs. The Forward has 1 goal and 2 assists with three game with the club.
