Cancelled gas plants could cost $1.1 billion

Ontario’s opposition parties say an auditor general’s report is proof the Liberal government was misleading people about the true cost of cancelling two gas plants.
Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk reported the cost of killing the Oakville gas plant was between 675 million and 810 million dollars — not the 40 million dollars the Liberals had claimed.
Add that to the 275 million dollar tab for shutting the partially-built Mississauga gas plant and the total bill is between 950 million and 1.1 billion dollars.
N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath says the Liberals were more worried about saving seats in the 2011 election than they were in what their decisions would cost.
Progressive Conservative energy critic Lisa MacLeod says the auditor’s report shows what the opposition has been saying all along, that the Liberals tried to hide the true costs of their gas plant decisions.
Premier Kathleen Wynne again apologized for the way the gas plants were handled, and promised new rules to give communities more of a say in where large energy projects are built.
