Fire Prevention Week – Kitchen safety

From October 6th – 12th, Firefighters across the nation will be promoting fire safety for Fire Prevention Week.

The key focus this year will be around the number one cause of fires; unattended cooking.

Fire Chief Rhéaume Chaput with The Ontario Fire Marshal Public Safety Council tells 570 News most don’t think that the kitchen is a dangerous place and don’t consider the numerous ways a fire could break out when preparing a meal.

“If you have a gas stove, you have an open flame. Loose clothing around the elements can catch fire, a lot of times if you put an oven mitt too close to the element it could catch fire. Those kinds of things are real issues but aren’t seen as that by most people.”

Chaput says this becomes more of an issue when alcohol is involved. Those cooking while drinking need to be extra cautious of their actions.

He adds it’s also important to have a working smoke alarm on every level of the home, an escape plan and a meeting area outside.
