A Local Catholic School Is Going Green Today

The staff and students of Our Lady of Grace Catholic School in Kitchener are holding an event Tuesday called “Wrapping Grace in Green”.

Everyone at the school will be wearing green, as green is the colour of organ donation, in support for one of their teachers.

Roberta Manley will be receiving a kidney tomorrow from a live donor, her brother.

The school’s principle, Lynn Woodbeck tells 570 News, Roberta has been leading the campaign for organ donations at the school.

“She has been truly what are school is about, she has been graceful. She is the one who has really lead the campaign and her message out there is that everyone (needs) to get on board, sign your donor card, go online and sign up and make sure your family knows of your wishes.”

As part of the event, everyone at the school will be wearing green, green ribbons will also be put up around the school. The school will also be holding an assembly for the students, where double lung recipient, Carol Dubeau of Waterloo, will be a guest speaker.

Statistics from the Trillium Gift of Life Network, the organization that oversees Organ and Tissue Donation of deceased donors, shows that organ donation in Ontario are still low.

Only 22 per cent of Ontarians registered although 80 per cent agree that organ and tissue donation is important.

There are over 1100 people on the organ transplant waiting list who are in need of a kidney.
