Waterloo says “No” to casino

The casino debate is over in Waterloo.

On Monday, city council voted unanimously against being a host city for a possible gaming facility.

Waterloo Mayor, Brenda Halloran tells 570 News the majority of residents were against a casino.

“We’re being looked at as a high tech community, a community that prides itself on it’s academics and focuses on citizens, and [being] a safe and healthy community. They felt that the casino just didn’t fit in with the vision of their Waterloo.”

Halloran adds she is proud the citizens took the time to voice their opinions, and proud of city councillors for listening.

Waterloo received over 1,000 submissions during its public engagement session, 920 of which were against a casino. 138 people supported a casino, 41 said they were neutral and 18 responses were not specific to a casino within the city’s boundaries.

Now, the city will be sending a letter to the OLG informing them of their decision.
