Smith inquest to start next month

The inquest into the death of Ashley Smith will start on January 14th.

The 19-year-old choked herself to death in October 2007 at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener.

The presiding coroner formally ruled last month that the inquest into her death would be broad based, after the federal government argued the inquest should focus only on her last days in Kitchener.

After shocking surveillance video of Smith was shown, correctional authorities withdrew their objections, and four out-of-province doctors agreed to appear as witnesses voluntarily.
