No relief at the pumps

Another jump of almost 3 cents a litre at the pumps last night has people feeling frustrated. As prices continue to soar with no relief in sight many people are thinking twice about planning a vacation this year.
“I have to think twice about driving to my cottage”, said Claire while filling up at over $1.30 per litre yesterday afternoon. This was before the 3 cent hike at midnight last night which brought the average prices of a litre in the Region to $1.35.7.
Mario Canseco is the V.P. of the Angus Reid Public Opinion poll and he tells 570’s Gary Doyle Show that these jumps historically happen around summer time, and aren’t a surprise to most people in North America, “People want to see something done about it, we had a lot of discussion in the U.S. as well, where they’re basically saying to Barack Obama, ‘do something about the gas prices or you might end up paying for it come election day'”. Canseco says that these hikes seem to come as the summer months approach, “This is something that we’ve seen also in the U.S. and the UK, prices tend to climb.”
Many people expressed their frustration by saying that it’s becoming cheaper to travel outside of the country, “It reduces your willingness to want to get in the car and go for a Sunday afternoon drive or even a vacation. It’s almost cheaper to buy a vacation or a cruise, than it is to travel within your own country, isn’t that kind of funny?” said Justin after filing up last night. Winston drives for a living and says it’s all a scam, “It’s a con man, I’m telling you. One minute you see gas at this price, next you see it at that price. It’s a con game. You know it and I know it.”
Canseco says that 72% of Canadians would like to see at least a temporary relief from the sales tax on gasoline when today’s Federal budget comes down.
