2002 Olympics – 10 years later

It’s hard to believe it has been ten years already.
But, today marks the 10th anniversary of the opening ceremonies at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Canada would go on to win 17 medals (seven gold) and finish tied for 4th in the medal standings.
Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams won gold and former Laurier Golden Hawk, Cheryl Pounder was part of that women’s team.
“I can’t believe it has been a decade…it feels like it happened yesterday to me.” said Pounder.
She tells 570 News she will always share a special bond with her teammates.
Pounder says all the odds were stacked against them at the Olympics because they didn’t play well against the United States that year.
As for where she keeps the gold medal…”People wouldn’t believe that it’s actually in my backpack…people always want to see a touch of gold so to speak.”
Pounder doesn’t display the medal in her home saying it’s more about the memories of that moment for her.
She’s still active in the game running a hockey school and raising two young daughters.
“Everyone is always joking around that I’m sure they’ll know how to skate pretty young, I’m hoping so (laughs).” added Pounder.
