Black History Month begins today

A celebration and recognition of the contribution of the black community in this country kicks off today with the start of Black History Month.
The annual commemoration traces its origins back to 1926, when it began as Negro History Week in the United States. 50 years later, Black History Month was born, intended to celebrate the history and contribution of North America’s black community.
Dr. Naila Keleta-Mae, of the University of Waterloo, tells 570 News, it also focuses on the future. “I think that Black History Month is part of that conversation, a moment to think about where are we and where we’ve come from and to envision where we’d like to go”, she says.
