A deadly long weekend

A tragic end to the long weekend for a Milverton area family.
OPP say a 7-year-old boy from the Township of East Perth is dead after being struck by a vehicle late yesterday afternoon on Perth Line 72 west of Newton.
Police say Steven Kuepfer and his family were returning from an outing and were dropped off in front of their home by a bus, when the youngster ran in front of the bus and was struck by an oncoming car.
The investigation continues.
Elsewhere, a rollover Sunday night on a rural road southeast of London killed one man and left another in critical condition.
Two motorcyclists died in separate collisions Saturday, one near New Tecumseth and the other in Oxford County between Kitchener and London.
And a cyclist was struck and killed Friday in a community near Lake Huron.
There were also a number of deadly crashes in the Toronto area, including one police blame on street racing.
O-P-P Sergeant Dave Woodford says provincial police also laid more than 36-hundred speeding charges over the holiday weekend, as well as some 620 charges for not wearing a seatbelt.
Woodford notes seatbelt laws have been in place for decades, saying “…you’d think that people would get it by now.”
Locally, Inspector Greg Lamport says they checked over 2,500 vehicles. Police made 2 arrests for imparied driving, and issued 2, three-day suspensions.
Lamport added – “Numbers that we’re seeing are promising to us. It is impressive that we’re getting a lot of cars being stopped, but very few impaired drivers. We’re pleased to see that. It’s good to see that the message is getting out.”
