Guelph Public Library property purchased by city, housing incoming

The City of Guelph has announced that they will be buying the Guelph Public Library’s main property. Their goal is to turn the space into housing.

The sale of the 100 Norfolk Street property in Guelph will follow the library’s move to a new building at 1 Baker Street in 2027.

Some affordable housing options are in future plans for the space. The city said in a release that they hope to create a range of housing options through the project. Including some below-market options.

Guelph says that they are using the $3.69 million that was received from Ontario’s Building Faster Fund back in 2025. The funding was awarded to municipalities that reached at least 80 per cent of the provincially assigned housing targets. Guelph was able to achieve over 85 per cent of their given target in 2024.

City of Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie added that this move is just another example of Guelph’s goal to make housing accessible.

“Housing has remained one of my most important priorities as mayor and for our community. Securing property for the public and social good of our city creates the right type of opportunities for housing. Working with the Guelph Public Library Board to facilitate this purchase was key, and we thank them tremendously.”

Throughout the next year, Guelph says that they will be looking into different options to turn the property into different living spaces. In their release, they listed some of the strategies they plan on looking into. Some options are leasing the land, or building through a partnership with housing providers or developers.

Guelph says that they will be engaging with the community before any development begins. More information about Guelph’s future plans for the building and how residents can get involved will be announced next year.
