The 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest officially starts one week from tomorrow and the anticipation is building.
Oktoberfest held its annual media night for the Bavarian themed festivities, where the Grand Marshal of the Oktoberfest Parade was announced. This year it will be Canadian sportscast icon Brian McFarlane, best known from his 25 years as a commentator on Hockey Night in Canada.

One of McFarlane’s best known moments was his interview with Philadelphia Flyers forward Bobby Clarke after the famous incident when the visiting Soviet National team left the ice during a game at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. They eventually returned and finished the game, but the bad blood was obvious in the interview…
Oktoberfest President Vic Degutis tells 570 News it’s hard to define what the most exciting aspect of Oktoberfest is for him, “we’re really happy with our festhalls, we have the 18 halls, we have the two new ones, we have the Cambridge Rotary Haus and we have the Chicopee Haus. Transylvania Club has found a new home, so we’re very excited about that.”
Degutis speaks passionately about the over 40 family and cultural events, “we have the Tour de Hans, it’s coming up on October 2nd… an event that always excites our community is the great Oktoberfest Parade.”
For the kids there are many events, Degutis highlights some of them, “in our Willkommen Platz in downtown Kitchener, we’ll have a midway going from Benton Street all the way down to Francis Street on the first weekend this year, there are many cultural and family events that are geared toward children.”
Dugutis adds that he hopes everyone comes out, to get their tickets soon and that, “Oktoberfest ist wunderbar!”
