Are you distracted?

It seems as though drivers are not getting it, when it comes to distracted driving.

The O-P-P will once again be running a blitz against distracted drivers and so far this year, more than ten thousand tickets have been issued due to distracted driving.

The President and General Manager of the Ontario Safety League, Brian Patterson, told 570’s Gary Doyle show, the police are doing a great job and it’s the manufacturer’s that need to step up their efforts.

“I think the corporations that have a vested interest need to step forward. I don’t see us going any further on the enforcement side.”

Patterson adds that educating people about distracted driving is the best way to make drivers realize how dangerous it is.

“I have to agree with the police when you consider that we’ve seen very little work from the manufacturer’s to reach out and say, the issues around distracted driving are as follows. At the end of the day I think Jim Balsillie telling people to get off their blackberry’s might be a good thing.”

Patterson says that police are doing all they can, and he’s optimistic that people are aware of the dangers of distracted driving.

He says that as technology improves, products such as Bluetooth and in vehicle hands-free engineering will make things safer on the road

However, he points out that educating drivers about distracted driving is the best way to keep our roads safe.
