The Waterloo Region District School Board has launched a new program, aimed at keeping high school students safe when out socializing away from school property.
It’s called “My Safe Ride Home” and it’s a co-ordinated effort between the school board and local cab companies.
Program co-ordinator, Marilyn Marklevitz, tells 570 News, if a student is in an uncomfortable or dangerous situation, they simply call a toll-free number on a plastic card, which connects them to the nearest taxi company, giving them first priority of available cabs.
Each pre-paid ride costs $30. The program is being tested at six high schools in the Region, including K.C.I., Huron Heights, and Bluevale.
