A community centre at the heart of Kitchener is finally back open.
The Mill Courtland Community Centre at 216 Mill Street, near Stirling Avenue South was closed over a year ago for a massive $5.32 million renovation project.
The project included a new 2,755 square foot addition with program rooms, recording studio and office space.
Washrooms, mechanical, fire, and electrical upgrades were also installed, as well as a new roof and windows.
Outside an enhanced greenspace with new storage options and a basketball court were also put in.
“The Mill Courtland Community Centre plays a vital role in bringing people together and strengthening a sense of belonging in the neighbourhood,” said Debbie Chapman, Ward 9 Councillor.
“With more space for City programs, community partners, and neighbourhood-led activities, this expansion will help more residents connect, learn, recreate, and support one another. It is a direct result of the feedback we heard from the community and an investment in the wellbeing of neighbourhood residents.”
The million dollar project was funded in part by the federal government’s ‘Build Communities Strong Fund Community’ initiative with $1-million coming from that stream.
The City of Kitchener was also behind a large portion of the funding.
The grand reopening of the community centre was held at the end of September after a 15-month long closure for construction.
