Local tech start-up creates big buzz with tiny device

A Waterloo tech start-up is changing the way companies look at data security.
I Think Security has developed a tiny device called the QI (pronounced “key”) that when plugged into a computer, allows a company’s employees to access and manipulate data securely. The technology is unique in that none of the data is actually stored on the device and you can have it running in about three clicks, so there’s no need for tech support.
Company President Cedric Jeannot says the philosophy behind I Think Security is, “Instead of building stuff and trying to put security on top of it…let’s look at security from a different perspective and in addition to the technology let’s also understand people. If you make it so hard for people to use it, people are not going to use it. So, we really came up with a comprehensive product that brings technology, ease-of-use and convenience.”
In addition to providing security, the QI allows companies to track who is accessing the data, from where and what they’re doing with it.
The QI was originally developed for small and medium sized business but Jeannot says the device has now generated interest from Fortune 500 companies and governments around the world.
He says he started the company in the U.S. but moved here because, “Canada has a lot more to offer, especially the Waterloo Region, in terms of running small businesses and support to grow.”
