Kitchener Reinvented

In the post-war era, Kitchener was a thriving industrial city, while Waterloo was just starting to grow. Now, as Kitchener struggles to adapt in a post industrial age, Waterloo has taken the reigns as the Region’s tech and economy leader, known more as a ‘university town’ and a ‘high-tech’ sector.
A former MP for Kitchener and a Professor at the University of Waterloo, John English wrote a Maclean’s magazine article, which outlines the change and growth of the area. To read the article click http://ow.ly/5TTMI
He was on 570’s Gary Doyle show and explained how and why Kitchener has had to re-invent itself, becoming more high tech and less industrial to keep up with the rest of the Region. English says that Kitchener is working to keep up with the times and sites competition between Kitchener and Waterloo as the reason Kitchener is beginning to adjust itself, turning to high tech industries, like Google, and higher education.
The article also outlines how Kitchener and Waterloo have been divided on decision-making in the past, but have recently become united over the LRT issue. He says that despite the economic struggles Kitchener has faced, including the two recessions of the 80’s and 90’s, it’s done remarkably well compared to the likes of Brantford, London and Windsor.
