Police- Reported Hate Crimes Up in the Region

A new STATS CANADA report states that in 2009 the number of police-reported hate crimes in Canada increased 42% with the highest rate being in Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo.

There were a total of 62 total reported in the region, that’s just under 18 incidents for every 100,000 people.

Regional Police Inspector Greg Lamport tells 570 NEWS the increase is because a task force created in 2003 assisted in the education of officers and the community to better recognize these types of crimes. He also says the increase shown in the report is in non-violent crimes specifically graffiti cases.
