Canadian Auto Workers members held an information picket at a Kitchener manufacturing plant this morning to support workers at a Manitoba plant owned by the same company.
The Manitoba workers have been on strike since April.
Chicopee Manufacturing is not unionized but CAW area director Bill Gibson says they wanted to remind the workers that what’s happening in Winnipeg could happen to them too. He says, “While this is a dispute in Manitoba, this could very well come to their own backyard. This is a corporation that is looking to get leaner and meaner and it’s on the backs of working people that they’re trying to do that.”
Gibson says their main issue with the company is that they want to cut retiree benefits.
Both the Kitchener and Winnipeg plants are owned by Magellan Aerospace Corporation.
