Wal-Mart in Stratford

The Mayor of Stratford is ‘disappointed’ following Wal-Mart’s victory.
A decade, and a million dollars in legal fees later, construction is set to begin in the city’s east end early next year.
Mathieson says the company has purchased a piece of land that will allow them to build a 90-thousand square foot store.
However, he says the company had previously stated it didn’t build stores under 135-thousand square feet. He says Wal-Mart has agreed not to expand — and that the city will hold the company to that promise.
Mathieson says the issue wasn’t about Wal-Mart building in Stratford, the city just wasn’t willing to create commercial space in the east end of the city, as council wants to continue developing the west end.
Wal-Mart bought a piece of property in the east end that is already zoned as commercial.
Mathieson says it’s been an emotional ten years, and he was not expecting this outcome. He believes Wal-Mart will definitely change the market place, but says it’s too early to tell how much.
He believes that some people will boycott the company.
