A new study has found that musical training can offset some of the harmful effects of ageing.
Study co-author, Dr. Nina Kraus, tells 570 News, that long-time musicians have a stronger memory and better hearing in later life.
Kraus says playing music enhances the musicians’ ability to extract relevant sound patterns in middle age and beyond. She says the study of musical patterns and sequences improves seniors’ ability to focus on the words in a conversation, particularly in noisy or distracting environments.
The study looked at musicians in their later years, who began playing an instrument at age 9 or earlier.
