With just 400 seats – the St. Jacob’s Country Playhouse is the definition of an “intimate experience” and that holds true with the current production of “Hairspray” which opens today.
Actress Stephanie Pitsiladis who plays the lead role of Tracy Turnblad tells 570 News that the size of the theatre really helps with the key moments of the show – especially those that focus on the relationships between her character and the members of her family.
The production is set in 1962 and the 50’s have officially past. It’s a time of change and Turnblad is a big girl from Baltimore with big hair and an even bigger heart. Her only passion is to dance and after winning a spot on a popular TV dance show, she goes from outcast to teen celebrity.
Pitsiladis says that playing the role has affected her life in a positive way as well. She tells 570 News “…you can’t help but catch that, it’s nice because it kind of transfers over into your everyday life. I believe I’m pretty positive as a person anyway’s, but it just…it adds that extra help to wake up in the morning going it IS beautiful outside today – it IS wonderful, you know!”
Hairspray is directed by Alex Mustakas. The production’s Music Director is Elizabeth Baird and the Choreographer is Gino Berti.
The limited 4-week run begins today (Wednesday May 11th) and runs through June 4th at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse located at 40 Benjamin Road East in Waterloo.
