Getting the vote out

The Conservative candidate for Kitchener-Conestoga doesn’t care if you vote for him. He just wants you to vote on May 2nd.
“When I leave a door I say, ‘look, even if you don’t vote for me, please make sure that on May 2nd, you vote,'” incumbent Harold Albrecht relates during an interview with 570 News. “The democracy that we enjoy here in Canada, there are many people around the world that are literally dying to have the kinds of freedoms that we have here.”
Albrecht’s comments are in sharp contrast to those of Kitchener-Waterloo Green Party candidate Cathy MacLellan, who told us last week that suppressing the vote is part of a Conservative strategy and the lower the turnout, the better for the ruling party.
Albrecht’s efforts to get the vote out followed our most recent online forum, during which he answered questions on everything from hijacked websites to contempt of parliament.
When asked why Conservative candidates chose not to attend a recent debate organized by the Community Coalition on Refugee and Immigrant Concerns, Albrecht wrote:
“I am happy to engage in the issues that are key to my riding – I have always engaged with immigrants and new Canadians in many forums including attending dozens of New Citizens ceremonies and welcoming them to my office for small receptions were they meet other new Canadians and my staff.”
Albrecht fielded nearly two dozen questions through the “new experience” of answering online and found it to be a worthwhile forum.
“To see the question in print, you can go back and clarify the exact wording that’s there,” Albrecht explained. “That helps you to, hopefully, formulate an answer that deals more directly with the question as it’s worded.”
