Fire Marshal looking into deadly blaze in Listowel

Ontario Fire Marshal inspectors are still trying to learn what caused a fire in a Listowel store that claimed the lives of two volunteer fire fighters.
30-year-old Raymond Walter from Listowel and 56-year-old Kenneth Rea from nearby Atwood died in the blaze that started on the roof of the store around 3:30 yesterday afternoon.
570 News was on the scene this morning and has this reaction from Ontario Fire Marshal Supervisor, Wayne Romaine…
Romaine tells 570 News the bodies of the fire fighters had not been removed from the building as of this morning because the structural damage from the fire makes it unsafe to work inside.
They will work with a structural engineer and shore up the building with some equipment from the OPP’s Search and Rescue team.
Romaine says “as the days and weeks progress” they will go over the evidence at the scene and the statements of the other firefighters.
Romaine confirms the building was getting some repair work at the time, and they are looking into that.
Romaine says it’s difficult to grasp the impact of a situation like this with a small community and volunteer firefighters.
He says the local firefighters are “an impressive group,” with a great deal of resolve.
Romaine says some members from that department will likely come out to the scene when the bodies of the victims are removed.
Romaine says the coroner’s office and the Ministry of Labour are involved in this investigation.
