Daylight saving time kicked in early this morning and local fire departments are reminding you that when you change your clocks this weekend take the time to change the batteries in all the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home too.
Waterloo Fire Public Education Officer John Percy tells 570 News that you need an early warning for when a fire breaks out. He reminds everyone that it’s the law in this province to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and especially outside all sleeping areas.
Percy says it’s illegal to tamper with or remove batteries from your smoke alarms and that failure to comply with the Ontario Fire Code can result in a ticket for $235 or a fine of up to $50,000.
Waterloo Fire is also encouraging residents to take the time over the March Break to make or review your family’s fire-escape plan and practice it with all family members.
Plans should include two ways out of every room in a residence.
