Beer prices could rise

If you need something to blame – then blame it on the rising cost of barley.
It all goes back to supply and demand. Flooding and other weather issues made for a less than ideal barley crop in 2010, which is important as malted barley is the main ingredient in most beer.
It’s a serious situation, not because we Canadians love a cold one – but because the price is estimated to rise almost 33%.
Lorelle Salinger with the Canadian Wheat Board says “…it’s a crop that’s in extra demand because of the increased love of beer in china…”.
The co-founder of Steamwhistle brewery says they’ve got their prices locked up for two years – but is hoping for good harvests to keep the price stabilized and the consumption up.
