An influx of patients

Grand River Hospital is adding beds and cancelling elective surgeries to deal with a high volume of sick patients.
But the hospital says patients should still visit the Emergency room if they need to.
In a release, Sue Robertson, GRH’s vice president of clinical services and chief nursing officer said, “Our staff and physicians are working exceptionally hard to provide the care that patients need. Hospitals sometimes experience surges of volume, and need to act to ensure patients who need an inpatient stay have access to a bed.”
GRH says visits were up 11% in January over the same month last year. It says they’ve even seen seven days this year when over 190 patients visited the E-R, a number not seen since the peak of the H1N1 flu pandemic.
