CO bill passes 2nd reading

A bill to get carbon monoxide detectors in all Ontario homes is one step closer to becoming law.

The private member’s bill by Progressive Conservative MPP Ernie Hardeman passed second reading on Thursday.

It is now off to a legislative committee for further study.

Two years ago, OPP officer Laurie Hawkins, her husband Richard and their two children all died when a clogged chimney vent caused carbon monoxide to seep back into their Woodstock home.

The home did not have a carbon monoxide detector.

Hardeman’s private member’s bill would amend Ontario’s building code to mandate carbon monoxide detectors in all homes, condos and rental apartments, not just those built after 2001.

Private member’s bills rarely become law in Ontario, but Municipal Affairs Minister Rick Bartolucci says he’s a huge supporter of CO detectors and has them on every floor in his home.
