TORONTO – Reports indicate that Toyota will announce today that the new electric version of the RAV4 will undergo final assembly in California.
The Globe and Mail says this would be another setback for Ontario in its effort to grab a slice of the growing investment in electric vehicles.
Toyota RAV4 crossover utility vehicles for the North American market are assembled at the company’s plant in Woodstock, Ontario.
The newspaper says RAV4 bodies will be shipped to Fremont, California where the electric components will be added.
Toyota came under pressure last year when it announced it would close its Fremont plant near San Francisco, the last vehicle assembly plant in California.
Earlier this year, the plant was purchased by California-based Tesla Motors, which is developing the major electric components for the RAV4.
