WRPS lay 107 charges through Thanksgiving weekend traffic campaign

By Erin Anderson

An annual road safety initiative over the Thanksgiving long weekend has resulted in more than 100 charges being laid in Waterloo Region.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) took part in the national Operation Impact campaign which targeted impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and failing to wear a seat belt.

“As roadways become busier over the holiday weekend, motorists are reminded to make safety a priority by driving sober, staying focused, obeying the speed limits and ensuring everyone in the vehicle is properly wearing a seatbelt,” said a social media post from WRPS ahead of the long weekend.

Not all drivers obeyed the laws as WRPS say they laid a total of 107 charges this year, which is up slightly from 102 charges in 2025.

The majority were related to speeding with 53 drivers charged. Ten stunt driving charges were also laid, along with 18 for impaired driving.

Police say there were 18 seat belt-related offences, and eight charges were issued for using a handheld device while driving.

WRPS are thanking all the motorists who prioritized safety over the long weekend.
