Local bakery fined

Kitchener-based J.T. Bakeries has pleaded guilty to federal and
provincial environmental violations and has been fined
$60,000.

The bakery contravened the federal government’s Migratory Bird
Conventions Act.

$10,000 of the fine will go to an environmental studies scholarship at
Huron Heights Secondary School.

An investigation by Environment Canada’s Enforcement Branch determined that over 600 litres of vegetable oil entered a storm management pond near Strasburg Road in March 2009.

It was after an oil holding tank failed.

The vegetable oil is considered harmful to migratory birds as it can lead to drowning or hypothermia, or interfere with birds’ ability to fly.
