Frito Lay bags to stay

Frito Lay is launching an online awareness campaign about SunChips. But it doesn’t have anything to do with the chips themselves, just the bag.

The bags are noisy to open because they’re now made of a biodegradable material.

The campaign’s message is: ‘Our bag is loud, our bag is different, our bag is good for the environment, and our bag will remain on store shelves.’

This material used to make the bags is polylactic acid. It’s 90 per cent renewable and gives SunChip bags a distinctly different sound than traditional chip bags because the plant-based materials are not as soft at room temperature. They will, however, completely break down in a hot, active compost pile in approximately 14 weeks.

Sustainability leader for Frito Lay Canada, Helmi Ansari,  tells 570News the campaign will answer questions about the bags on Facebook and Twitter.

All the SunChips distributed across Canada are made in Cambridge, where about 100 million bags are produced each year.
